Top Lakes in Ireland

Top Lakes in Ireland

I have been living in this beautiful country for five years already, and recently I have become addicted to the lakes you can find here. There is so much history, natural beauty, and fun things to do that it’s really hard to pick just one. Nevertheless, we embarked on this quest (my bike, my gear, and I) and I believe my selection, while not long, is fair and genuine.

Here are my top 8 loughs in Ireland.

Lough Key

Lough Key with McDermott castle

Lough Key is a fresh water lake located in County Roscommon, and it is believed to be named after a mythical figure named Cé, who was the druid of the god Nuada.

Although not possible to visit the castle from inside, or to dock on Castle Island, you can still have a good view of this beautiful castle from Drumman’s Island or book a boat tour around the island.

Lough Leane (and Muckross Lake)

One of the highlights of Lough Leane is the presence of several islands that add to its allure. Stag Island, Burnt Island, Brown Island, Mouse Island, Devils Island, and Inisfallen Island are just a few of the enchanting islands that can be found on the lake. Each island has its own unique charm and offers a glimpse into the rich history and natural wonders of the area.

Killarney National Park also borders the lake, offering hiking trails past historic sites like Muckross Abbey and Ross Castle set amidst unspoiled wilderness. From the shoreline one can admire panoramic views of this sprawling parkland.

Lough Tay (aka Guinness Lake)

Lough Tay 1

Resembles what you can find in a pint of Guinness doesn’t it?

Nestled in the Wicklow Mountains south of Dublin is the beautiful Lough Tay. This glacial lake is surrounded by steep hills and forests, making it a striking landscape.

Lough Tay 3

What makes Lough Tay truly unique is its distinctive appearance. The white sand, combined with the dark peaty waters of the lake, creates a striking contrast that resembles a pint of Guinness, not to mention it is privately owned by the Guinness Estate, hence its nickname.

Lough Derravaragh

Lough Derravaragh

The lake is surrounded by rolling hills and forests and is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including otters, swans, and ducks. It is also the site of an ancient monastic settlement.

Lough Derravaragh is popular for recreational activities. There are also scenic walking trails around the shoreline. The lake has become an increasingly popular spot for birdwatching in recent years due to the diversity of birds found here.

Glendalough

Glendalough Lake

I have been there at least three times this year, not only because it’s not far from where I live, but also because it is surrounded by lush greenery and towering mountains 😃. It’s really good if you are an outdoor enthusiast and/or a nature lover.

Glendalough Lake

Such a nice day to read a book…

You can explore the area through various walking trails that offer panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings, or simply relax when there are not many tourists around.

Lough Ouler

This was an interesting day. I took my niece with me this time and we were not expecting such a steep hill to walk through. And after a lot of “I am dying…” and “I should have brought different shoes…” complaints later, we were presented with a beautiful view that should also be part of our Top Heart Shaped Lakes post.

Anyway, just as additional information, this scenic lake sits at the foot of Tonelagee Mountain, offering stunning views for those who make the trek. There are two main trails: a challenging loop hike and a more straightforward route from the Turlough Hill side.

If you are driving yourself, try to go through the Old Military Road (if you are going to Lough Tay, Lough Ouler or Glendalough), which is breathtaking.

Lough Talt

The place inspires trekking. Seriously! You get there, and you will want to start an adventure trail.

Lough Talt is a popular spot for water sports such as kayaking and canoeing. The lake is surrounded by rolling hills and forests, making it a scenic spot for hiking and outdoor activities.

The lake is a designated Special Protection Area under the European Union’s Birds Directive, which aims to protect important bird habitats and species. This recognizes the lake’s importance as a breeding and feeding ground for several bird species, including the whooper swan and the Greenland white-fronted goose.

If you are driving in this area, don’t forget to look to your left 🙂

Lough Corrib

Lough Corrib, located in County Galway, is the largest lake in the country. This vast expanse of water is renowned for its crystal-clear waters, stunning landscapes, and rich biodiversity.

The lake’s tranquil waters and lush surroundings have been immortalized in numerous works of art, and inspired literature, and music. The lake’s atmosphere provides a perfect setting for those seeking a peaceful retreat offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.

Thank you for reaching this far.

Feliz aniversário, Helly 🙂
