Located in Wailuku River State Park, Hilo, Hawaii, Rainbow Falls drops 24 meters (80 ft.) into a 30-meter (100 ft.) width-pool below surrounded by lush, dense tropical foliage. There is a deep lava cave situated behind the falls, which is the mythological home to Hina, an ancient Hawaiian goddess. Rainbow Falls derives its name from the fact that, on sunny mornings, one can see a kaleidoscopic rainbow formed in the mist thrown up into the air by the waterfall. Swimming used to be permitted but is now prohibited for safety reasons.
